Think your photos have what it takes to WIN? FANTASTIC PRIZES – including dive equipment, live-aboard trips, and resort stays – are up for grabs to the best shutterbug. PLUS, winning photos will appear at the Malaysia International Dive Expo 2008 as well as in the pages of Scuba Diver AustralAsia.

So are you ready? Then get set, and shoot till your heart’s content!
(And please read the general rules before proceeding.)

 
CATEGORIES

MACRO (MAC):
Any image taken with a macro lens.

WIDE-ANGLE (WA):

Any image taken with a wide-angle lens.

PORTFOLIO (PF):

You may send in a range of underwater photographs or specifically on one category. A total of 10 images must be submitted for this category.

YOUNG UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER (YUP):

This category is only open to photographers who were born after 1 June 1983. (Please send proof of age together with the entry form.)

UNDERWATER ART (ART):

This category is open to interpretation, and is specifically for fresh images you feel don't fit in other categories. Be artistic. Be witty. Be funny. But most of all, be creative.

UNDERWATER MALAYSIA :
Any photo taken in Malaysian waters (including Sabah and peninsular Malaysia). Photographers will be bound by the honour system ñ please no cheating.

 
RULES & REGULATIONS
1. The 2008 "Through the Lens" photo competition is open to entrants of all skill levels, but excludes the staff from Scuba Diver AustralAsia and Asian Geographic, as well as field editors, judges, and prize sponsors.
2. Winners of the 2008 "Through the Lens" photo competition will be announced at the MIDE show
(4-6 July 2008). The results will be published in Scuba Diver AustralAsia Issue 4/2008 as well as on ScubaDiverAA.com
3. Images that have won or placed in photo contests announced before 1 March 2008 may not be submitted. A winning image is defined as any image that has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any contest that has resulted in prizes worth US$100 or more.
4. Photographers retain all copyrights to their images. Scuba Diver AustralAsia retains the right to publish the contest entries to congratulate the winners and to promote future events.
5. With the exception of the Art category, Photoshop manipulation is limited to:
  • Tonal corrections and colour corrections (no dodging/burning allowed);
  • Moderate sharpening and saturation (but blurring of backgrounds is not allowed);
  • Removing or repairing dirt and lint from scanned negatives or noise and faulty pixel and damage from digital images;
  • Cropping, but only 10% of the original image. (Contestants will be bound by the honour system.) Submissions which have obviously been heavily cropped will be disqualified.
6. All images need to have been taken underwater. Split shots are allowed.
7. Entries may have been taken from any camera: film (as scanned slides) or digital.
8. Model release is the responsibility of the copyright holder.
9. Staff and judges are not responsible for loss or any damage to photographic submissions.
10. Judges' decision will be final.
 
IMAGE FORMAT

Entries must be saved in RGB jpeg format at a size of 14” (about 35cm) in the longest dimension (regardless of whether it is a portrait or landscape image) with at least 300dpi in resolution.

Save each category separately on a CD/DVD, making sure to write or label your name and email address on the disc itself (not the cover!).

 
LABELLING YOUR IMAGES

Name each jpg file according to the following template:
Category_LastName_FirstName_Entry#.jpg

Example: WA_Smith_John_01.jpg

 
ENTRY FORM & SUBMISSION

The Scuba Diver AustralAsia 2008 "Through the Lens" photo competition is free to enter. Each contestant may enter only TWO (2) categories of his choice. Within each of the two categories chosen, you may submit a maximum of FIVE (5) images, with the exception of the Portfolio category.

All entries must be received before the deadline date of 1 June 2008. Please print out the Entry Form, making sure to fill out all applicable questions. Attach the entry form with your CD/DVDs and send the package to:

Photo submissions accompanied by an incomplete form will be disqualified. Photo submissions to the Underwater Malaysia category without a description of where it was shot will be disqualified. Photo submissions will not be returned.

Proof of postage does not mean proof of delivery. To guarantee receipt of your submission, we recommend sending packages by registered mail or courier service (FedEx, DHL etc.).

JUDGES
The five esteemed judges from around the world are tasked with the difficult job of sifting through thousands of high-quality photos shot by photographers vying for awesome prizes, to be announced at the Malaysia International Dive Exhibition in July 2008.

The judges are Malaysian photographer Richard Ng Wai Chiew, Bali-based Field Editor and photographer Mike Veitch, US-based Field Editor and Senior VP at PADI Worldwide Al Hornsby, US-based Field Editor and photographer Doug Sloss, and Scuba Diver AustralAsia editor David Espinosa.
